In 1971, Barbara and Hank Shire opened a small store named Soap Plant Wacko. This store sold handmade soaps, ceramics, and leatherware. Initially, the store was located in Los Feliz Village.

Later the store was moved to a large place on Melrose Avenue by their son Billy where he added books, ceramics, and other items which led the store to international recognition.

In 1984 right next to Soap Plant, Billy opened Wacko, a pop culture toy shop having a wide collection of postcards, gimmicks, games, robots, and whatnot.

In 1995, the store was moved back to its original location which is the current location of the store covering 6500 square feet of retail space.

Their merchandise further includes home and gardening commodities. These consist of home décor items, party supplies and music, kitchen and dining, and bath products. Electronics and stationary items are very attractive for the kids. In apparel, items like rings, key chains, socks, and other clothing products for kids/men/women are available.

Based on its colorful product variety, the store has earned the trust of its customers. The majority of the people purchasing their products leave positive feedback for Soap Plant.
